Nearly 1,000 illegal migrant workers nabbed in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) - Advisor to the Thai Labour Minister, Narumol Thandamrong, said Monday some 910 illegal migrant workers have been nabbed in crackdowns operated by a newly-set up special center on suppression, arrest and prosecution of illegal foreign workers over the past 10 days. Narumol was speaking to a seminar held for 120 officials from the newely-set up center and provincial labour offices to exchange knowledge and experiences on their operations against illegal foreign workers. Narumol said that six employers of the illegal migrant workers have also been arrested during the 10-day crackdown period. According to the advisor to the labour minister, most of the arrested illegal migrant workers are from Myanmar, followed by Cambodia and Laos who worked in local industrial and construction sectors. The new center, set up by a prime ministerial order on May 3, 2012, is in charges of suppression, arrest and prosecution of foreign workers who work illegally in Thailand and even brokers who illegally transport migrant workers into the country. Arrested immigrants who are found not to have undergone a national verification process will be prosecuted and deported to their home countries. (TNA)
