New York gallery hangs Iranian photographer’s works

TEHRAN,April 13(MNA) -- A collection of works by the Iranian photographer NewshaTavakolian is currently on display in an exhibition at the Thomas Erben Gallery in New York.
This is her first solo exhibit in the United States of America, the gallery announced on its website on Thursday.
Entitled “Look”, the collection is Tavakolian’s most recent series, which consists of staged large-scale photographs in which lone subjects are framed against a window view of high-rise buildings. All shot at the same evening hour, the images are permeated with a cold bluish tone, giving them a richly cinematic quality.
The exhibition was previously held at Tehran’s Aran Gallery in December 2012.
Tavakolian, 32, began her career at 16 with working for the Persian daily Zan. She has covered wars and natural disasters, and produced photo documentaries in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Yemen.
She gained international success with work published in magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, New York Times, Der Spiegel, Le Monde and National Geographic.
Over the past few years, she has focused particularly on women’s issues and created collections such as “Mother of Martyrs” and “The Day I Became a Woman”.
