NGO Welcomes Proposal For Treason Act

SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), June 12 (Bernama) -- Non-governmental organisation Jalur Tiga (Jati), on Tuesday welcomed the proposal for a Treason Act to deal with acts of treason against the Malaysian King in order to protect the sovereignty of Malaysia's royal institution. Jati deputy president Aidit Ghazali said the Act was necessary to curb the activities by irresponsible parties which vilified the Malay sultans (rulers). "As Malaysians, all races should play their part in defending the royal institution. It's not just up to the Malays and Muslims only. "If this situation is not curbed it could jeopardise the nation's harmony and weaken the royal institution which has been our symbol from the start," he said at a press conference on the Ehya Ramadhan charity night here. He was asked to comment on former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Noor Abdullah's proposal for the enactment of the Treason Act to curb the rampant vilification of the royal institution lately. -- BERNAMA
