NIHR president receives US ambassador

Manama, Dec. 6 (BNA): President of the national Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Dr. Abdulaziz Hassan Abul, received here today the US Ambassador to Bahrain, William Roebuck. Complaints, monitoring and follow-up Committee Chairperson, HE Ms. Maria Antoine Elias Khoury, Acting Secretary-General Chancellor Yasser Shaheen and Director of ICT, Fahad Al-Maalla were also present. NIHR President lauded the outstanding solid Bahraini-US relations and cooperation in various fields. He highlighted the NIHR's strategy, which is prepared in accordance with international standards, and in line with His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's support and interest in constantly upgrading the human rights system at all levels to ensure the rights of the citizens and residents alike. Dr. Abul highlighted the NIHR's role in following up on court hearings to ensure that fair trials are ensured, stressing, at the same time, the fairness and independence of the judiciary in Bahrain. He also lauded the "Judges of the Future" Programme, implemented by the Supreme Judicial Council in cooperation with the NIHR, noting that the programme is aimed at preparing youth judges who are keen on upgrading human rights. He also highlighted the "constructive" cooperation between the Interior Ministry and the NIHR, lauding the Interior Ministry's efforts to develop policing and keenness on delivering all necessary services to inmates, in line with the Interior Minister's great interest in implementing training programmes, within the framework of the Ministry's development and modernisation strategy. The US Ambassador expressed his readiness to provide all kinds of support to NIHR in order to be able to achieve its goals, and to enhance joint cooperation in the field of human rights protection and development.
