NIHR's complaints committee holds meeting

Manama, July 27 (BNA): The Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee at the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) held its 16th regular meeting chaired by the institute chairperson Maria Khoury. The committee discussed the decisions related to workers’ rights that aim to maintain their health and safety, including prohibition of work from 12 to 4pm during July and August, and to reduce number of workers in workplaces, ensuring social distancing measures in rest and waiting rooms and vehicles. It reviewed complaints registered from January to June 2019 and dealt with 43 complaints, provided 154 legal assistances, monitored 22 cases in social media and received 401 calls on the hotline in 2019. From January to June 2020, it dealt with 32 complaints, provided 304 legal assistance, monitored 77 cases in social media, and received 854 calls through the hotline, which presents a more than 100% increase. The committee stressed the importance of spreading awareness among foreign workers on their rights in several languages as well as the possibility of getting help and legal assistance by communicating with the institution.
