Nomination for UNESCO-King Hamad Prize for Use of ICT in Education open

Manama, June 13 (BNA): The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has announced that it is now accepting candidatures for the 11th edition of the UNESCO- King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education, and that the deadline for nominations is Thursday, October 31, 2019. The prize aims to honour pioneering international projects and programmes in using information and communication technology (ICT) to provide education for all, in line with UNESCO’s main goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all through electronic systems. The Prize will award Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered solutions as well as applications of neuroscience in AI aimed at improving the educational and learning environment and promoting reading skills. It will also shed light on successful experiences in teaching and educational management through effective use of digital tools and materials. Education Minister, Dr. Majid bin Ali Al-Nuaimi, said that UNESCO’s continuous support for the Prize reflects its outstanding success ever since it was launched by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in 2005. Regarding eligibility criteria, UNESCO said individuals, institution, or non-governmental organisation (NGOs) with a project that is relevant to the specific theme of the 11th edition (i.e. that uses AI-powered solutions to enhance education, improve learning outcomes or empower teachers) could participate, adding that all applicants should contact the NGO or National Commission ahead of the application process, as self-nominations will not be accepted. The prize jury will convene in November to examine the nominated projects. The winners will be honoured during a special ceremony to be held in Paris, France.
