OSCE preparation in Vienna

Vienna, October 26, 2009 (Khabar) - Preparations for the forthcoming chairmanship of Kazakhstan in the OSCE are underway in Vienna. Over the last two years, a number of training courses, seminars and “round tables” have already been held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, the permanent representation of the country and the Secretariat of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Kazakh diplomats visited a so-called “field” mission of the OSCE as well. The delegation of the Kazakh Foreign Office and its target group formed for performing chairmanship functions have arrived for current consultation sessions in Vienna.

Roman Vasilenko, chairman of Committee for international information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan:
- According to the Secretary General of the organization, we’ve already completed the stage of training seminars and advanced to the so-called “team building” stage, or the stage of creating a single team. A country which is located to the east of Vienna and known to be predominantly a Muslim country situated chiefly in Asia and the country which acquired independence only 18 years ago, correspondingly a very young country will take up the post of the OSCE chairman. So, it stands to reason that the president defined the chairmanship of the OSCE as a nation-wide strategic project.

Representatives of Finland shared their work experience during the chairmanship in 2008 while the Secretary General of the OSCE Marc Perrin de Brichambaut who paid a visit to the office of Kazakhstan’s permanent representation expressed confidence about Kazakhstan managing this difficult yet interesting and honorable mission.

Serzhan Abdykarimov, ambassador, director of OSCE department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan:
- There are a large number of issues which we’ll have to settle. These are important issues concerning European security, arms reduction and the issues of so-called long-running conflicts in the area of the organization. Concerning the secondary dimension which is economic and environmental activity, we are planning to advance a solution to the Aral Sea issue as a threat to the regional security.

The forthcoming chairmanship of Kazakhstan enables the country to assign experienced and skilled diplomats both to the Secretariat and OSCE institutions in The Hague and Warsaw. The experience of leadership in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will be helpful in the future as well when Kazakhstan receives a chance of taking the chair in other organizations, for example, the Islamic Conference in 2011.
