PM holds talks with Muslim world leaders on violence-plagued Thai south

BANGKOK, September 17 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has assured Islamic world leaders that Thailand gives importance to all religions and will solve the conflict in southern border provinces with peaceful means, says Spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office Sansanee Nakpong. Secretary-general of the Muslim World League (MWL), Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Turky and Secretary-General of the World Conference of Religions for Peace, Dr. William F. Vendley and their entourage paid a courtesy call on Premier Yingluck at the Government House earlier Monday, according to the spokesperson. Sansanee revealed after the meeting that both organisations visited Thailand upon the invitation of Mahidol University's Institute of Human Rights and Peace Study to participate in a seminar on Religion and Peace Building Process in ASEAN. The purposes of the visit is for Thailand to cooperate in helping to build peace in the three southern most provinces of the country, as well as in ASEAN as a whole. The spokesman further noted the prime minister informed the secretary-general of MWL and his delegation that the Thai government sees every religion as equally important. She also stressed that her government has been using peaceful tactics in developing every sector, especially those in the Thai southern most region. The prime minister said she is more than happy to cooperate on the suggested method and that she has been trying to help develop the Muslim communities in the south through peaceful negotiations.
