PM urges people to wear local Thai costume during Songkran

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has asked the celebrants to wear local traditional dresses while joining the annual festival while urging them to splash water at each other politely during the current Songkran festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year. Gen Prayut praised people in several areas in the country who wear Thailand’s traditional garments while participating in the water splashing festival, according to government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd. He said their dress reflects Thailand’s outstanding image. Lt Gen Sansern quoted Gen Prayut as saying the dress has also helped in reducing sexual harassments from drunkard celebrants. He said the prime minister has also asked the festival govers to use safety and small bowls in splashing water at each other in areas permitted by authorities while entertainment complexes should sell alcoholic drinks within specific time permitted by the law. The three-day Songkran festival ends Sunday. (END)
