Population survey of monitor lizards at Lumpini Park
BANGKOK, Sept 3 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) welcomed experts to conduct a survey on monitor lizard population at the Lumpini park in the heart of the city in order to control its number.
Bangkok governor, Pol Maj Gen Aswin Kwanmuang said that the survey has to be done by experts from the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. In Thailand, monitor lizards are protected species. The BMA is responsible for looking after the park to prevent the animals frightening visitors, doing exercise there.
The governor conceded that it is difficult to control the monitor lizard population. In 2016 and 2017, it worked with the national parks department to relocate 300 monitor lizards but its population at the park has not decreased. It is expected that about 400 are currently living there. (TNA)
