President gives interview to foreign journalists

Astana, October 07, 2009 (Khabar) - Over 14 million foreign tourists are planning to visit Kazakhstan in the near future. Nursultan Nazarbayev promised that their holidays in Kazakhstan will be unforgettable. The head of state has given an interview to foreign journalists who arrived in Astana to cover the 18th session of the World Tourism Organization General Assembly. The president told reporters of western Mass Media about the unique opportunities of Kazakhstan in the tourist sector. There are special places in Kazakhstan which foreign guests are strongly recommended to visit. The president suggested starting their trip with Astana which is the youngest and the most rapidly growing capital city on the Eurasian continent.

Alla Peressolova, a journalist from Spain asked the president for the basis for his idea to build Astana.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- There was an ancient saying in the East which reads that cities create a country while its capital makes a state. We declared our independence and started creating a brand new country with a new policy and economy. We had to change the mindset of people which was the hardest part. And proceeding from this, I thought it was a good idea to start with a new capital and new intellectual potential. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was an economic dislocation, unemployment, enterprises used to stand idle and there were no goods in the shops. It was the time when I suggested that a new capital should be built. This idea, career, authority and the future were at stake. It was necessary to give people an inspiring idea that we are capable of doing that when they were going through this devastating period. So the result of it is obvious. There was nothing but steppe right where we are today.

Nursultan Nazarbayev recommended visiting Shymbulak ski resort and Medeo outdoor speed skating rink, having a look at the Charyn canyon, going to the Burabay resort which is considered to be the “Kazakh Switzerland”, taking a trip to the Caspian Sea shore, getting to know ancient historical monuments and, most importantly, becoming utterly immersed in the culture and traditions of the Kazakh nation.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- Hospitality is in the blood of the inhabitants of steppe regions. They believe that any guest who comes to their house brings well-being and happiness.

John Bell, a journalist from Great Britain wondered what the president would personally advise a foreign tourist to experience in Kazakhstan.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- First of all, I would suggest going up in the mountains. Secondly, I would advise a tourist to see our great steppe and enjoy the beautiful scenery and thirdly, to go into a Kazakh yurt, try beshparmak and drink some kumys.

Nick Izam, John Bell and Anna Peressolova are journalists who specialize at tourism sphere. They have seen many countries and Kazakhstan has really impressed foreign journalists.

Nick Izam, journalist, USA:
- I was amazed by Kazakh hospitability. I have been to a lot of states, but I haven’t seen anything like this. I think that Kazakhstan’s hospitability is the main property of your republic from tourism attractiveness point of view. I am proud that I have met Nursultan Nazarbayev. He is very interesting person. His life experience and progressive thinking impress.
