Qatari Premier : UN Should Shoulder Responsibility Towards Situation in Syria

Oslo, February 27 (QNA) - HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani has expressed his pleasure at visiting Norway along with the delegation accompanying him, and praised as "excellent and historic" the relations between the two countries. In a joint press conference with Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg here on Monday, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani said that Monday's talks discussed the bilateral relations in all fields, besides the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Syria. In this regard, HE the Premier and Foreign Minister stressed that the UN should shoulder the responsibility towards the situation in Syria by working to end the violence there, stressing the necessity to work on the protection of the Syrian people. HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim urged the Syrian government to take a decision to end the killings and achieve peace, adding that "Friends of Syria" meeting held recently in Tunisia and the next one due to be held in Turkey are both meant to help the Syrian people, end the violence and stop the bloodshed. "We want to help our friends also in this direction," HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said. "The Syrian people must choose what they want in their country. "We can't stand idly by as the Syrian people get killed every day without helping them with food and medicine," said HE the Premier and Foreign Minister. He also referred to HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's proposal to send Arab troops into Syria to stop the hostilities. He said that the Arab countries must consider arming the Syrian opposition in order to stop the bloodshed after an 11-month-uprising against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. "I think we should help (the opposition) by arming them so as to defend themselves. The Arab countries should do that through an Arab and international assembly ," HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said. (QNA)
