Reduced plastic garbage campaigned in Bangkok

BANGKOK, November 12 (TNA) - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Thailand have jointly organized the "World Science Day for Peace and Development 2018", a campaigning event, in Bangkok to raise public awareness on the reduced use of plastic materials and garbage to protect the environment on the sustainable basis. The adoption of modern science and technologies to the reduction of plastic garbage, a major challenge globally now, was the main theme of this year's World Science Day for Peace and Development. Thai Vice Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Kanyawim Kiratikorn said plastic garbage has caused adverse environmental impacts worldwide with a much more serious trend in the coming years, if no efficient solution. The vice minister acknowledged that science and technology can play a key role to address the global challenge through collaboration and cooperation by all parties at all levels for the sake of the more practical management of the plastic garbage. According to the vice minister, Thailand has continued developing and introducing environmentally-friendly innovations that help reduce the plastic garbage, while campaigns on calling on the participation of people from all sectors in the reduction, reuse and recycling of plastic materials have also been launched in the country. The vice minister suggested that the production and use of bio-plastic materials in other foreign economies, considered to be suitable for Thailand, be also applied to the Kingdom's practical management of palstic materials and garbage. Meanwhile, the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) stated that NSTDA has driven forward its plans on developing relevant technologies and bio-plastic products from cassava starch and corn flour, which can be naturally decomposed and become environmentally-friendly with non pollution, while also campaigning on the use of the "green" plastic products widely in domestic industries and among consumers. UNESCO and Thailand's Ministry Science and Technology and NSTDA were the co-organizers of the "World Science Day for Peace and Development 2018", held in Bangkok last weekend. (TNA)
