Royal reforms supportive to Bahraini women highlighted in seminar on human rights in Geneva

Manama, June 24 (BNA): A Bahraini parliamentary delegation chaired by Shura member, Jameela Salman, participated in a seminar for parliamentary human rights committees on (Parliamentary engagement on human rights: Identifying good practices and new opportunities for action) organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) held on June 24-26 in Geneva. Addressing the first session, Al Salman highlighted Bahrain’s leading legislative achievements at the international level and the constitutional principles supportive to Bahraini women, noting the royal reforms that promoted the Bahraini women’s status socially, economically and politically. She pointed out Bahrain’s international commitment to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women, which boosted their status under comprehensive collaboration between legislative and executive branches. The first session focused on means of harmonizing work of parliamentary committees with the work of the UN Human Rights Council to enhance the role of parliaments in the OHCHR working mechanisms. The second session reviewed the parliamentary participations in the Universal Periodic Review human rights and in the UN bodies on human rights.
