Russia condemns terrorist act in China’s Urumqi - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, May 22 (Itar-Tass) - Moscow is shocked by the incident in the western Chinese city of Urumqi, an administrative centre of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich has said. “We’re shocked by a barbarian terrorist act in Urumqi that led to numerous losses of lives. We hope that those who organised and committed the terrorist act will be found and punished,” he said on Thursday. “We condemn this bloody crime. Russia sincerely seeks to further strengthen cooperation with China for fighting terrorism and extremism in all its forms,” Lukashevich said. “We convey deep sympathies to the next-of-kin and wish the soonest recovery to injured people,” he said. The incident occurred at 7:50 a.m. local time (0:50 a.m. BST) on Thursday at an open market near Renmin park. Eyewitnesses said two cross-country vehicles rammed into a crowd of people. One vehicle exploded and an explosive device was thrown from another one. During the incident, 31 people were killed and 94 were wounded, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
