Saving of the Aral Sea
Almaty, December 04, 2009 (Khabar) - What has been done and what must be done to save the Aral Sea. This issue has been discussed in Almaty during the first meeting of the board of International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea with the participation of Deputy Prime Ministers of Central Asian states. Seven years ago the heads of five countries approved a special program designed for 2003 - 2010. It includes 14 priority areas to improve the environmental and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea basin. At the meeting, the members of the board of Fund have listened to reports on done work under this program. It turned out that about 60 projects were realized during these years in order to preserve the sea. According to chairman of the executive committee of the Fund, primarily those projects were aimed at improving of social situation of region’s population, for solution of complicated water economy problems, restoration of ecological systems and environmental monitoring. In addition, local reservoirs were created in the deltas of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers, work on development of drained bottom is underway, and the northern part of the Aral Sea is revived gradually. Now according to the commissions of heads of state-founders of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, the other large-scale program for 2011 - 2015 years is elaborated. This has been said during Almaty summit.
Umirzak Shukeev, first deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, a board member of International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea:
- All countries spent about 1.9 billion dollars for saving the Aral Sea and we have reviewed the basic structure of the content of the next ASBP-3 program. In principle, the substantive part of this program is fully discussed, approved by all delegations except for brief remarks from the Tajik and Uzbek side, these comments were successfully overcome, and in general everything is reviewed and approved.
Sagit Ibatullin, chairman of the Executive Committee of International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea:
- Kazakhstani part of the sea is considered to be saved, it is saved stably and water volume of about 20 billion cubic meters annually supported, and will be stepped up, will be the second stage of RSAM-2. So, the Kazakhstani part is an example of what can be done in these circumstances, any positive results to achieve.
