Scientist suggests moving Thai capital to NE

BANGKOK, Feb 4 (TNA) - A wellknown Thai scientist, Dr. Art-ong Jumsai Na Ayutthaya, warned on Saturday that Bangkok could only withstand rising water levels over 7-8 years from now and it is, thus, appropriate to move Thailand's capital to somewhere in the country's Northeast. Speaking on “Disaster and the Future of Thailand" at a national assembly held at the United Nations regional headquarters in Bangkok, Dr. Art-ong, who is a former scientist at US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), acknowledged that global moisture rises every year, causing an increase of water in the world, including Thailand. Dr. Art-ong said statistics have shown that the amount of rain water and water stored in Thai dams in 2010 exceeded required standards and stood at 126 per cent and it further increased to 137 per cent last year, cautioning that there are signs the amount of water will keep rising this year. The former NASA scientist suggested that the Thai government learn how to divert floodwater into the sea as quickly as possible and develop water retention areas for use during the dry season, and that, as the amount of water has been increasing and Bangkok has kept on sinking, the government be farsighted by relocating the Thai capital to higher ground, namely somewhere in the country Northeast. Regarding to the Mayan prophecy that 2012 would be the end of the World Dooms Day, the leading Thai scientist cited global scientific research as saying that the world has already lived half, or 4,500 million years, and it could stay another half before it ends, noting that there would rather be a reaction between the sun and the earth this year, as such the phenomenon had, so far, occured every 11 years, and that 11 years ago, there was a blackout in every major cities in the world. The senior Thai scientist cautioned that there could be a strong earthquake in Thailand late this year and the aurora solar storm, which was seen in the North Pole recently, ould cause a breakdown in communications system with its severity probaly happening between December 2012 and early 2013.(TNA)
