ANTALYA (A.A) - 20.02.2009 - Sculptors all around the world will join a sandland festival in a Mediterranean Turkish city, the organizers said on Friday.
Around 30 sculptors all around the world would join the Lara Sandland 2009, an international sand sculpture festival, in the Mediterranean city of Antalya in May, festival director Cem Karaca said.
"Sculptors from Brazil, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, the United States, Russia and Turkey will build sand sculptures on Antalya's Lara beach in May," Karaca told AA correspondent.
Five sculptors will use around 1,000 tons of sand and make a Chinese dragon in 25 days, and run their candidacy for the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest and tallest sand sculpture category.
The festival will be organized with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Antalya Metropolitan Municipality.
Around 500,000 people are expected to visit the festival, the theme of which will be mythology. 
"The sculptors will build sculptures of mythologic incidents and heroes in Egyptian, Greek, Scandinavian, Japanese, Chinese, Maya, Aztec and Turkish cultures," Karaca said.
Karaca also said that the festival would take place in a 15,000-square meter area.
The festival will begin on May 20 and end on October 20. The 10x15-meter sand sculptures are built only by using water and sand. 
The sand sculpture is a special ephemeral arts that has developed in the world recently.
