Security beefed up during Songkran Festival
BANGKOK, April 3 (TNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon convened a meeting on Monday where he stressed the need for tighter security both within the country and along its borders to circumvent the possibility of violence during Songkran.
Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich, the spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said that an internal security meeting was called by Gen Prawit to coordinate an integrated national security effort during Songkran.
Gen Prawit instructed all departments to be on alert and emphasised the importance of intelligence and information gathering to deny ill intended groups the opportunity to undermine public safety or cause disturbances.
Gen Prawit wanted the highest security to be placed at vital land, air and waterborne transportation hubs as well as other high risk locations.
The setting up of local coordination centres were approved at all festive locations where special events will be organised to provide assistance when needed. To prepare officials for possible crisis situations coordinated drills with security forces must be employed to maintain the highest level of effectiveness of personnel.
It was agreed that a coordinated effort was needed if public peace and safety was to be guaranteed during Songkran. Internal security forces will handle intelligence gathering which will be shared with all other departments. Contingency plans for possible emergencies must be developed to handle every possible scenario that could threaten public safety and minimise damage to property.
The spokesman went on to reveal that by employing zoning specific locations within each province has a been designated as Songkran event venues. The sale of alcoholic drinks is expressly forbidden and a strict dress code must be adhered to. Also a policy to minimise the overall impact on the environment at all locations has been specified.
The meeting also approved authority for all officials to take immediate action on any party or group whose actions are deemed a social vice or a security risk. Furthermore, improved illumination and the installation of additional CCTV cameras have also been approved nationwide as an added precaution.
Finally, security forces posted along the country's borders have been ordered to be on high alert from now up to Songkran to counter narcotics and contraband trafficking. (TNA)
