Self-proclaimed Lugansk on verge of ecological catastrophe

KIEV, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - The situation on the territory of Lugansk remains critical after artillery attacks by Ukrainian law enforcers, which paralyzed power, water supply and communications to the break-away territory. "Lugansk is devoid of power supply, in fact, it is in a state of a humanitarian catastrophe. Some of the population of the regional center has been devoid of water, power supply and telephone and Internet communications since Sunday. Many people have been living in a blackout for a week already. There is no telephone communication in Lugansk itself, and no calls have been put through to the city from elsewhere. "Despite high air temperatures no garbage has been removed on the territory of the regional center because most of the garbage collecting vehicles of the Lugansk waste utilization center have been damaged. Therefore, the city is on the verge of an ecological catastrophe," the press service of the Lugansk city council admitted Tuesday. On Tuesday, a total of 250,000 peaceful residents of Lugansk, most of whom are pensioners and families with children who cannot leave because they have nowhere to go, have, in fact, become hostages in their own city. The people have to survive under conditions of an armed confrontation; foodstuffs, which have been scarce at shops which are still open, might vanish altogether any time. Four city hospitals for peaceful civilians, wounded as a result of artillery attacks, have been partly destroyed. Learn more on itar-tass.com
