Senate ratified conventions in sphere of nuclear safety

Astana, January 16, 2010 (Khabar) - On Friday the first in this year's plenary meeting of the Senate was held. Opening the meeting the speaker Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev noted the importance of goals and challenges facing the state this year. In particular, a new stage of economic development, the implementation of initiatives of head of state on implementation of industrialization, creating a single economic space within the Customs Union require the legislative support. The head of the Senate expressed confidence that our country will successfully carry out the responsible mission of OSCE chairman.

Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, chairman of the Senate:
- Kazakhstan with its active and constructive work will give a new impetus to the OSCE, and fruitfully influence on its development. On the eve of President Nursultan Nazarbayev presented key priorities of our country to the highest office in the OSCE to the participants of video address at inaugural meeting of the Permanent Committee of OSCE. Significant events that Kazakhstan should hold this year - the Trans-Asian Parliamentary Forum in Almaty and the meeting of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly in Astana. Also, this year is marked with important dates in the history of the country – 15th anniversary of the Constitution and the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory.

At the meeting, the deputies voted for ratification of 4 conventions in the field of nuclear safety. The objectives of these documents are to achieve a high level of nuclear safety worldwide, creating and maintaining effective means of protection from potential radiation hazards at nuclear installations, accident prevention and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste.

Akhan Bizhanov, Senate deputy:
- According to experts, the signing and implementation of these documents will ensure access for domestic producers of nuclear fuel to the latest technological developments of foreign companies and increase the share of Kazakhstan's uranium production in the international market in the coming years.

The Senate returned for revision to the Majilis draft law “On Protection of Consumer Rights”. New instrument should change the law that was adopted 19 years ago in the Kazakh SSR. According to the developers, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the bill would create an effective system of regulating the relations of the seller and buyer.
