Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi's title as UNHCR’s Eminent Advocate renewed for third term
ABU DHABI, 30th May, 2017 (WAM) -- UNHCR, the UN Refugees Agency has announced that Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Wife of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has renewed her title as UNHCR’s Eminent Advocate for a third two-year term. Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi has been an adamant supporter of UNHCR’s work and operations since her first signing in 2013.
"We are so honoured that Sheikha Jawaher has consented to renew her title as UNHCR’s Eminent Advocate for another two years. Sheikha Jawaher is a pioneer in supporting refugees and humanitarian causes in the region, and we are extremely grateful for her important engagement and her significant contributions to improving the lives of the displaced," said Toby Harward, UNHCR Head of Office in the United Arab Emirates.
The UN Agency also announced in a press statement that The Big Heart Foundation, TBHF, has made a contribution of AED3 Million to support refugee health care in Jordan. The donation ill support the provision of primary medical and health care for thousands of refugees through the TBHF Clinic in Zaatari Refugee Camp.
Sheikha Jawaher champions humanitarian initiatives regionally and globally. She has devoted herself to alleviating the suffering of refugees, especially children. Since her appointment as an Eminent Advocate for refugees, she has developed and supported many programmes that promote the well-being of refugees in the MENA region and Southeast Asia.
She also established the 24/7 clinic inside Zaatari Camp in Jordan to ensure that refugees receive adequate health care, and also has backed activities in support of victims of sexual and gender-based violence.
Sheikha Jawaher has also funded programmes which provide educational services for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Egypt.
The UNHCR Eminent Advocate has, personally and through TBHF, supported a total of 766,000 refugees and internally displaced persons in the region and globally, with a total financial assistance of approximately US$22 million. http://wam.ae/en/details/1395302616601
