Songkran Celebrations Start in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, April 13 (TNA) - Celebrants of Songkran Festival, both foreigners and locals have officially started their joys in the northern province of Chiang Mai. People, dressed in Lanna-styled assembled at the Thapae Gate and offered dried food and necessities to monks for blessings amid an opening ceremony, presided over by provincial governor. The opening ceremony features cultural performances and a parade of Songkran Goddess. Miss Chiang Mai lights up the event in her roles as the beautiful Songkran Goddess. A procession of traditionally-attired women, who hold colorful umbrellas while riding bicycles, depicted the northern unique tradition. The cultural charm, which has been preserved by local people, attracts tourists to celebrate the Songkran festival in Chiang Mai every year. (TNA)
