Steppe Eagle-2009 tactical exercises

Almaty, September 15, 2009 (Khabar) - Steppe Eagle-2009 international tactical exercises began in Almaty region. It involved over 1.5 thousand soldiers from Kazakhstan, Great Britain and the USA. The main aim of the event is to improve the battle readiness and peacekeeping operations featuring international forces. The scenario stipulates that the opponent opens fire and peacekeepers need to break through. As a result of the battle, a Kazakhstan soldier was wounded but the mission was completed and terrorists were eliminated.

Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, Minister for Defence of RK:
- These are important tactical exercises as they strengthen friendship between our states. Our soldiers show their skills and they are as good as foreign soldiers in fact. As a result, they participate in other operations to gain more experience.

This year, NATO is focusing on the KAZBRIG battalion. During their service in Iraq, the soldiers from this peacekeeping brigade defused over 4.5 million explosive items. The NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, Robert Simmons, said that if the tactical exercises turn out to be fine, the battalion will be granted the UN mandate to operate in other corners of the world where there are conflicts to provide security and stability in those regions. This is the 7th time the Steppe Eagle has been held in Kazakhstan. In 2006, the exercises were added to the NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan on Kazakhstan.
