Student loans revised
Astana, October 28, 2009 (Khabar) - Kazakhstan has revised the rules for preferential educational loans. In order to keep the anti-crisis program underway, the requirements for prospective borrowers were revised by the Ministry for Education and Science. From now on, students of any specialty can obtain a loan with an annual interest rate of only 9% with the borrowings available only for good and excellent students.
Zhanseit Tuimebayev, Minister for Education and Science of RK:
- Preferential loans can be issued for first-year students whose average score at the university is no less than 65 points as well as good and excellent senior students. Masters are also allowed to take out such loans. In the event that the borrower doesn’t have any deposits, the Financial Centre of the Educational Ministry will be the surety for the borrowing student.
The loans will be given for 17 years and the borrowers don’t have to start paying off the debt until a year after their graduation. According to experts, such students will be paying back 15000 tenge a month. According to the education and Science Minister, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, this year, students will receive a lot of support from the government. One third of all students are now studying under state grant programs while over 4 thousand excellent school pupils have received additional grants from regional governors, university rectors and national companies.
