Students’ construction squad movement celebrates 50th anniversary

Petropavlovsk, October 22, 2009 (Khabar) - Developing virgin lands, building cities and roads, and collecting cotton were all among the routines done by students’ construction squads many decades ago in Northern Kazakhstan. The first SCS were established 50 years ago. The 5th congress of the Republican Zhasyl yel teams and students construction squads was devoted to this event. The very first squad was formed in the Moscow State University whose students came to work in the north of Kazakhstan. It was them who built the first road in the town of Bulayevo.

Anna Kravtsova, Bulayevo resident:
- They worked very well. They built two-storey houses and sheds.

For one day, the Bulayevo railway station was turned into the 1959 railway station with old tractors and horses with a number of people meeting the first Construction Squad.

Vladimir Andreyev, students’ construction squad veteran:
- It is hard to describe it. The reception that we had on the railway station today was amazing. People had those old-fashioned suit cases. It looked just like it was many years ago.

All construction squad participants were eager to help their country. They developed virgin lands, built houses and roads in the Far East and collected cotton in the south. Today, these mature people say they would join the construction squads again if they were asked to. In the district central park, the construction squad veterans and a young generation planted some trees to remind those who developed this land. Squads began disappearing once the Soviet Union had broken up. In 2000, Kazakhstan saw a second birth of such a movement thanks to Nursultan Nazarbayev. As a result, the Zhasyl Yel and construction squads appeared. This year, around 50 thousand people took part in the implantation of the 100 schools 100 hospitals and the Road Map programmes.
