Supreme Judiciary Council Commemorates International Day of Women Judges

Doha, March 09 (QNA) - Supreme Judiciary Council will organize Thursday a panel discussion tackling woman's experience in the judicial area to mark the International Day of Women Judges. This event comes within the framework of the celebration of the first anniversary of the UN General Assembly adoption of a resolution drafted by the State of Qatar in early 2021, calling for the adoption of a day in the international calendar concerned with female judges, which has already been achieved, as the 75th session of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Qatar's draft and March 10th was declared as International Day of Women Judges. The panel discussion aims to highlight the presence of women in the judicial field and the policies of empowering Qatari women through the participation of a number of women in the judiciary and the public prosecution, as well as prominent women leaders in Qatari society. HE President of the Supreme Judiciary Council and President of the Court of Cassation Dr. Hassan bin Lahdan Al Hassan Al Mohannadi stressed the trend of the State of Qatar and its judiciary to support the role of women professionally and humanely, and to enhance their efforts in the judicial sector, stemming from its permanent pivotal role in all past international efforts towards realizing the sustainable development goals, which are essentially women empowerment files in all areas of life. The State of Qatar supported adopting an international day for women judges, which was included in the final statement of the second high-level meeting of the Global Network for Judicial Integrity of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which was hosted by the State of Qatar in the year 2020, where the meeting witnessed the launch of a pioneering initiative to allocate a world day for women judges in the UN calendar to be celebrated globally under the umbrella of the United Nations. This initiative is considered an annual occasion to reaffirm the importance of womens participation in public institutions, including the judiciary, and the commitment of the international community that participatory and representative decision-making at all levels requires gender balance. After appreciated efforts of Qatari diplomacy, represented by the permanent delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in New York, and with the support and assistance provided by more than 70 countries around the world, the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Qatari draft resolution, and March 10th was adopted as the International Day of Women Judges.
