Technology crime suppression center to be set up

BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) – The Royal Thai Police plans to set up a technology crime suppression center to deal with call center scams. Pol Gen Thanitsak Teerasawat, special adviser at Royal Thai Police Headquarters and Deputy Tourist Police chief Surachet Hakpal told a press conference that the center will be establish to cover wrongdoings such as call center and romance scams. Victims were convinced or threatened to reveal their personal information or transfer money to the gangs by various tactics. The police also returned one million baht to five victims. It is the 17th handover of cash to the victims of call center gangs. Pol Gen Surachet said that the police are following the money trail, transferred from the victims to scammers to seize the money and return to the victims every week. Peerapat Ingpongpan, deputy spokesman of the Anti-Money Laundering Office said that after arrests of call center gangs, the police still remain vigilant and warn people to beware of being deceived to open a new bank account. With the personal information, disclosed to scammers, the gang can withdraw the money from the victim’s new account through internet banking. Since December 2017, the phone and electronic media fraud prevention and suppression center has received 446 cases with the damage of 235 million baht in total. About 20 million baht was seized and returned to 110 victims. (TNA)
