Tests show some food souvenirs unsafe
BANGKOK, April 4 (TNA) – Some samples of food souvenirs from each region are tested positive for unsafe amount of preservatives, said Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the Foundation for Consumers.
The random check of popular food souvenirs from each region, comprising candy floss crepe (Roti Saimai), fermented fish sauce, northern Thai green chilli dip and Tai Pla curry paste.
She said 42 samples of these four food products were collected for tests.
Most are safe for consumption while some products contain the amount of preservatives such as benzoic acid, over the safety standard.
Regular consumption of too much preservative can cause irritation in the gastrointestinal system. Food additive build-up and exposure for a period of time can cause serious illnesses in the long run.
The foundation will submit test results to the Food and Drug Administration to give suggestions to these food producers, so they can improve their food quality, which are popular among Thai consumers and can be promoted for exports in the future. (TNA)
