Thai Govt welcomes opposition’s proposals on solutions to southern insurgency

BANGKOK, September 19 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa said on Wednesday the government welcomes the opposition Democrat Party’s nine-point proposals on solutions to problems in three southern border provinces and it is willing to improve its performance to tackle the Deep South unrest. Yutthasak, who supervises security affairs, told reporters Wednesday that the meeting between the government and the opposition on solutions to southern insurgency went very smoothly on Tuesday. Yutthasak said the government has already been working on some of the opposition’s proposals, namely the promotion of justice and the deployment of volunteers to assist security operations of authorities in the far South. The deputy prime minister also argued that the government’s newly-set-up southern command center will not duplicate the works of other agencies and that it will support the works of the prime minister and local authorities to solve the problem in the Thai South.
