Thai health minister calls for clean food

BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) - Recent findings point to sub-standard quality of Thai food products sold locally, prompting Thai health officials to re-engage their policies. Figures show that around 93 percent of selected producers had sailed through the Good Manufacturing Practice standard. However, only 15 percent of selection distribution outlets had managed to pass the same test. Public Health Minister Wittaya Buranasiri said he has told the Food and Drug Administration and the Medical Sciences Department to jointly increase their watch over food safety issues. The Minister said as a confidence-building measure, extra checks would be carried out on food producers, processors and distributors, covering market outlets, department stores and hospital kitchens.
