Thai Military Reopens Six Golok River Boat Jetties
By TUWAEDANIYA MERINGGING (PD)
NARATHIWAT (Thailand), June 16 (Bernama) -- The Thai military has reopened six boat jetties along the Golok River that where closed on June 3 as a measure to tighten security at the Thailand-Malaysian border.
Narathiwat Task Force military chief Maj Gen Wichan Suksong said the jetties were reopened after the local residents agreed to monitor the individuals crossing the border there.
"The residents also agreed to check activities that can undermine security in the areas,” he said to reporters here Thursday.
The residents had objected to the military’s decision to close the jetties because it hampered their cross-border travel for personal and business reasons.
The residents had held a meeting with Wichan and Narathiwat provincial governor Sittichai Sakda on June 11 to find a solution.
The Golok River separates the Narathiwat province of Thailand and Rantau Panjang in Kelantan on the Malaysian side.
