Thai Muslims protest at US Consulate in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND, September 19 (TNA) - Thai Muslims in northern Chiang Mai province gathered Wednesday in front of the United States Consulate to protest against an anti-Islam film, which sparked anti-US protests in many Muslim countries. About 30 policemen were deployed to ensure order at the U.S. Consulate, where about 10 Thai Muslims led by Wing Commander Somkid Latthisak staged the protest. The demonstrators read a statement to condemn people involved in the making of the film "Innocence of Muslims” that considered offensive to Islam. They demanded the U.S. government take responsibility by punishing the film producer. The demonstrators also submitted a letter via Consulate’ official to U.S. ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenny, who is scheduled to attend a seminar at Chiang Mai University later Wednesday. (TNA)
