Thai Narcotics Police Seizes Export-Bound 6.3 Mln of Yaba Tablet in Ayyutthaya

By Mohd Haikal Mohd Isa
BANGKOK, Sept 19 (Bernama) – In one of the largest seizures in recent memory, the Thai authorities confiscated 6.39 million "Yaba" pills (a type of Methaphetamine drug) with a street value of 1.318 billion Baht (RM164.7 million).
The drugs also known as "Crazy pills" were seized in Ayutthaya, central Thailand last Sunday following the arrest of five local men, said the country's Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) head Lt Gen Sommai Kongvisaisuk.
"This is the largest seizure of 'Yaba' in our history since we have NSB. We followed the syndicate for about a month before we arrested them," he told the media here, today, adding that the drugs were hidden inside a truck transporting corn grain from Chiangrai, northern Thailand.
He believed the drugs were not only for domestic use in Thailand, but would be re-exported to other countries.
The syndicate members according to Sommai, planned their smuggling attempt meticulously in order to ensure the authorities did not detect their movement.
"They sent empty trucks to use the smuggling routes just to check on the presence of enforcement officers, before conducting the real smuggling," he said.
Meanwhile NSB's southern region commander Maj Gen Dusadee Choosankij said, his officers arrested four local men in Chumphon, southern Thailand last Sunday and found 10kg of "Ice”and 200,000 tablets of "Yaba".
He said the men confessed to being paid 1 million Baht (RM 142,000) to drop the drugs in Hatyai, before someone would pick up the drugs.
According to Dusadee, he believed the drugs were for the export market due to the high quality it possessed. (photoBERNAMA)
