Thai PM commends ASEAN

PHNOM PENH, April 4 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday praised the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the 10-nation bloc's significant roles in promoting regional peace and security, acknowledging that Thailand is ready to move toward the establishment of new economic partnership and also welcomes moves by the international community to lift economic sanctions against Myanmar. Yingluck, now attending the 20th ASEAN Summit and related forums in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, said that Thailand is pleased to have involved in ASEAN's talks with dialogue partners, which have further boosted ASEAN’s position in international community. Yingluck noted that there are now emerging significant issues, namely battling against transnational crime and money laundering, which need cooperation among ASEAN member states to maintain peace in the region. According to the Pheu Thai premier, economic issues are also important towards peace and security and economic volatilities in Europe and the United States are threatening the world; so, ASEAN has to depend more on other Asian and Pacific countries. On marine cooperation, the Thai premier opined that ASEAN needs to cooperate with dialogue partners in trying to solve piracy and to protect the regional marine environment. Premier Yingluck also welcomed positive political development in Myanmar, where by-elections were held last Sunday, proposing that ASEAN also encourage the neighbouring country to cooperate more with the international community and urge the international community to lift economic sanctions against Myanmar. The two-day 20th ASEAN Summit and other related forums, scheduled from March 30-April 4, coincide with the 45th anniversary celebration of the establishment of ASEAN. (TNA)
