Thailand to handle large amount of solar panel waste

BANGKOK, July 23 (TNA) - Thailand’s Department of Industrial Works has developed a plan to handle waste from used solar panels, which could pose an environmental threat to the country in the future. Department director-general Mongkol Pruekwatana said the amount of solar panel wastes Thailand produces in the next 25 years is expected to exceed 500,000 tons following government’s support of the solar energy use in the country. The Thai authorities have a policy to promote the use of solar energy since 2002, resulting in the increased number of solar farms and solar roofs across the country. Nonetheless, solar panels normally last for 25 years, and they will become waste afterwards. He said the department will collaborate with relevant agencies to develop measures and impose regulations on waste disposal and management. A pilot recycling plant, specifically designed to handle solar panel waste will be built as part of efforts to minimize adverse effects on environment. (TNA)
