Thailand has more organ donors last year
BANGKOK, Feb 16 (TNA) - Thai Red Cross Society’s Organ Donation Center reports more organ donors last year and the most accumulated number is recorded in the Northeast.
Director of the Thai Red Cross Society Organ Donation Center Wisit Thitawat, MD, said the number of organ donors increased to 294 people last year and about 670 patients receive organ transplants.
Most wanted organs by patients on the waiting lists are kidneys, livers and hearts respectively.
Moreover, most donors or 80,000 people in accumulated number are in the northeastern region.
The organ donation situation in Thailand has improved with the organ donation rate rose 40 per cent and becomes the best in Southeast Asia, he said.
He hailed public relation campaign by government agencies for successfully raising awareness among people to donate their organs.
Each person can donate 2.4 pieces of organs or can help about two organ recipients. Organ donors must not have HIV, Hepatitis B and C virus. (TNA)
