Traffic accident prevention to be improved
Astana, November 05, 2009 (Khabar) - Kazakhstan needs to improve its traffic accident prevention. That was the conclusive statement made at a meeting held by the deputy head of the Presidential administration, Talgat Donakov.
Talgat Donakov, deputy head, Kazakhstan Presidential Administration:
- Since Kazakhstan gained independence, around 60 thousand people have been killed in traffic accidents while almost 300 thousand people have been injured.
Since 2008 when traffic rules were toughened, the rate of traffic accidents has seen a gradual decrease.
Serik Baimaganbetov, minister for interior affairs of RK:
- We have seen a decrease in traffic accidents over this year too. Over 9 months, the number of traffic accidents has gone down by 9% while the rate of deaths and injuries has also seen an 18% and 10% decrease respectively. We have also toughened control over the use of seat belts, mobile telephones and tinted windows.
According to the Ministry for Interior Affairs, 80% of people killed in traffic accidents this year are under 49 years old. A total of over 1 million traffic violations have been registered to date while 500 thousand drivers were fined for driving under the influence. According to international experts, by 2020, traffic accident trauma will become the third largest cause of death in the world.
