ERDOGAN RESPONDS TO ACCUSATIONS OVER FREEDOM OF PRESS
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan severely rejected Tuesday allegations that the government had launched a campaign against journalists criticizing the ruling AK Party, manipulating courts to put them behind bars. "Arrests of journalists is a decision made by the courts. Show me a single journalist who is under detention because of criticizing the government. There are 27 journalists under arrest and the reasons for their arrest are terrorism, sexual abuse and looting," he said.
SENIOR BUREAUCRATS RESIGN TO RUN IN ELECTIONS
Resignations of senior state officials Tuesday came hours apart to clear the way to run in the upcoming general elections in June to win a seat at the parliament. Police Department chief Oguz Kagan Koksal, head of the Public Security Agency and former Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler, Ankara Chief Prosecutor Mehmet Yucesoy was among those who quit. State officials are required by the elections law to leave their offices in order to run in the elections. They would resume their posts if they fail to secure MP title.
