Turkey's jobless rate down to 11.9 pct in January 2011

ANKARA (A.A) - 15.04.2011 - Turkey's jobless rate decreased to 11.9 percent year-on-year in January 2011.
Turkey's statistics authority, TurkStat, made public the results of a household labor force survey for January 2011.
The authority said Turkey's jobless rate decreased by 2.6 points to 11.9 percent in January 2011 compared to the same month of 2010. Jobless rate was 14.5 percent in January 2010. 
TurkStat also announced that the unemployed population in the country dropped to 3,044,000 in January 2011, as the number of the employed rose to 22,461,000, marking an increase of 1.29 million over January 2010.
The institution said non-agricultural jobless rate was 14.7 percent while youth unemployment stood at 22 percent. 
Participation in the work force was 48.1 percent in January this year, 0.6 points higher than the same month of last year, TurkStat said. 
Nearly 16.6 percent of the work force was at 15 to 24 years of age, while work force participation rate among university graduates was 86.1 percent for men and 72.7 percent for women.
TurkStat said that the number of agricultural workers grew by 362,000, as the number of non-agricultural workers rose by 937,000 in January 2011.
In this month, 24 percent of the employed worked in agricultural sector, 20.7 percent in industrial sector, 5.8 percent in construction sector and 49.4 percent in services sector.
Unregistered employment was 40.9 percent, marking a 1.4 points decrease over a year earlier. 
Deseasonalized data showed that the number of the employed rose by 214,000 in January 2011 compared to a year earlier, whereas the number of the unemployed dropped by 71,000 people.
