ANKARA (A.A) - Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin will travel to United States to attend Nevruz celebrations and meet representatives of Turkish associations, his office said in a statement on Monday.
Sahin will fly to New York on Tuesday.
On the same day, Sahin will have separate meetings with Faruk Taban, president of Turkic-American Association, and Turkish students living in and around New York. Later, he will attend a dinner to be hosted in his honor by Ertugrul Apakan, Turkey's Permanent Representative to UN.
On Wednesday, Sahin will separately meet Meskhetian Turks and Assyrian citizens living in New York, delegations from Federation of Turkish American Associations, Assembly of Turkish-American Associations, Turkish American Business Improvement & Development Council, and Turkish-American Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
On Thursday, Sahin will attend Nevruz celebrations organized by the International Organization of Turkic Culture (Turksoy) at the UN General Assembly.
He will return to Turkey on Friday.
Nevruz, the world's oldest festival which is celebrated by festivities under various names in many communities, is being celebrated in the Turkish World as "the exit of Turks from Ergenekon" and "the beginning of the new year in Turkish calendar with 12 zodiac divisions represented by animals" since 5000 years.
Some accept this day as the day God created Earth, some as the day Prophet Noah stepped on Earth after the Flood. Some accept it as the day first human-being is created, and some as the messenger of Spring.
