TurkStat survey: 61.2 percent of Turkish people are happy
ANKARA (A.A) - 04.03.2011 - More than half of Turkey's population over the age of 18 are happy and hopeful, according to a survey carried out by the country's statistical board, TurkStat.
TurkStat carried out the survey in 2010 with the participation of 7,027 people, measuring perception of happiness, hope, values, personal development and individual satisfaction with personal health, income and work.
As for economic aspects of daily life, the survey revealed that 54.2 percent of people began consuming cheaper products and 33.8 percent got into debt.
According to the survey, 61.2 percent described themselves as happy while 10.7 percent said that they were unhappy. Those rates were 54.3 percent and 14.6 percent in 2009 respectively. The rate of happiness is 62.7 percent in women and 59.6 percent in men while it is 63.7 percent among married individuals and 53.5 percent among single ones.
Family is the most common source of happiness among Turkish people. It is followed by child, spouse and parents. Only 1.9 percent considered themselves as their source of happiness.
Health tops the list of elements making Turkish people happy. 71.2 percent described health as the most important value while 13 percent pointed to love, 6.9 success and 4.6 percent money.
When asked whether they are hopeful about the future, 72.8 percent of respondents said they are hopeful. This rate is 72.9 percent in women and 72.7 percent in men.
