Undersecretary urges measures to end Rohingya Muslims plight

New York, Sept. 28 (BNA): The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, called on the international community to take all necessary measures to end the tragedy of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, as it is considered a serious issue to humankind, harming the international system. This came during a speech delivered by Dr. Shaikh Abdulla at the opening session of the special high-level event on the plight of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, under the chairmanship of OIC Secretary General, Dr. Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen. Dr. Shaikh Abdulla reviewed his personal experience during his visit to the Cox's Bazaar region during the 45th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Dhaka, where he stressed the magnitude of the tragedy experienced by the Rohingyas refugees in difficult humanitarian circumstances, and thanked the Bangladesh Government for providing shelter for these refugees. The undersecretary urged OIC Member States to continue their efforts to highlight the plight of the Rohingyas in order to bring justice to the victims of these grave violations, which constitute crimes against humanity, and call upon the Government of Myanmar to take full responsibility towards the Rohingya refugees to ensure their return to their homeland and to provide them with protection and decent living without discrimination or persecution on grounds of religion or race. The meeting was attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bangladesh, Shaikha Hasina, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, and the Special Envoy of the United Nations to Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, as well as the representatives of various concerned bodies and organisations.
