Verdict on Thais nationals detained in Myanmar expected Monday

BANGKOK, July 29 (TNA) - Myanmar will hand down its verdict against 10 Thai nationals charged with illegal possession of weapons and narcotics this Monday. The Thai nationals will be brought to the court of Kawthaung town, where they could face life imprisonment if given maximum punishment. Meanwhile, Myanmar authorities have not given any confirmation on the release of other Thai people detained there, including on rumours of the release of 10 Thai women on August 12. It is understood that the Kawthaung court earlier sentenced 92 Thai people to three years and six months in jail for illegal immigration and deforestation at the border. However, the central government will reconsider their cases for possible punishment relief or pardon. (TNA)
