Vienna fashion at Karlsplatz
Vienna, November 10, 2009 (Khabar) - The Vienna Museum at Karlsplatz has witnessed the opening of an unusual exhibition, which involved the most important trends of the period of flourishing fashion on the Ringstrasse street. This was the street, where the first fashion shop was opened and gradually became a place for dalliance. At these shops women were able to buy corsets, boots, beautiful hats, ball gowns and dresses for horse racing. The Perfume counters also offered tooth paste and tanning creams. The clothes of famous actors and actresses served as the subject of gossip. The current exhibition involves different accessories such as walking sticks, umbrellas and fans. In 1850, one American woman started to defend the rights of women to wear trousers and in 1860, a movement of painters and craftsmen advocated the right for women to wear corsets and voluminous dresses. As a result, physicians and cultural figures from different countries were involved in reforming fashion industry.
Peter Stuber, press-secretary of Vienna Museum at Karlsplatz:
- The Ringstrasse fashion period of the 19th century was very important, since it was a time when the bourgeoisie of Vienna spent all their money on clothes. This street welcomed stylish people, who came here just to walk and show off. Everything which was fashionable in Paris, was immediately adopted by Vienna but since local fashion designers preferred more conservative styles, these clothes were not as eccentric as in Paris.
At that time, fashion also had icons of style. For example, the empress Elizabeth, who was called Sissy, was always dressed perfectly regardless of the weather or place. She was 170 centimetres tall and had a 51 centimetre waist. She was always wearing corsets and protected herself from the sun with a parasol. The display also presents swimsuits, tennis costumes and all other things that made women feel free. Men were more practical in accordance with bourgeois values. At the beginning of the 19th century they wore dark suits with stripped ties and only a watch chain reflected their personality. The closing part of the exhibition was devoted to dinner clothes. The Vienna Museum at Karlsplatz involves both elegant clothes of the world of fashion and the everyday clothes of ordinary people which were far from luxurious.
