Warning issued for box jelly fish off Pha Ngan Island

SURAT THANI, Sept 18 (TNA) – Surat Thani governor issued a warning for multi-tentacled box jelly fish, found off Pha Ngan Island. A sting from a venomous box jelly fish can cause death in minutes. Surat Thani governor Witchawut Chinto sent an urgent letter to local authorities on Pha Ngan Island to warn tourists about the deadly jelly fish. Swimming should be avoided at the Chaloklam bay. The local Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center found 25 box jelly fish from the samples collected between Sept 10-11 from the bay off the island. Warning signs have been placed on beaches and vinegar is prepared on the locations to give the first aids in case of a tourist being stung by the venomous jelly fish. Net buoys have been placed in the sea off Rin beach, the venue of the famous full moon party to prevent the box jelly fish from entering the beach zones. Guards have been stationed at the beach to help tourists in case of an emergency. Doctors suggest persons, who are stung should pour vinegar on their wounds within 30 seconds. Fresh water cannot be used. Local hospitals have been prepared to treat patients with a jelly fish sting. (TNA)
