SINGAPORE, March 17 (Bernama) -- Maybank Group Islamic Banking has kickstarted its annual flagship corporate responsibility programme - the Regional Ramadhan Relief (RRR) - worth US$310,840 (RM1.4 million) that will benefit more than 7,000 underprivileged families across 11 countries, including in Singapore.
"We are committed to initiatives that benefit all levels of society, be it through social programmes or our financial solutions, and this programme is one of them,” said its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohamed Rafique Merican in a statement issued here Thursday.
“Indeed, we are grateful to be able to continue with this programme and share sustenance not only with those in need in Malaysia but also in the rest of ASEAN member countries and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates where Maybank Islamic has a presence.”
Using Zakat funds, the RRR programme aims at distributing food supplies to underprivileged families to meet their basic dietary requirements during the fasting month.
Since 2013, the RRR programme has benefitted over 96,000 families and has contributed over RM16 million to support the underprivileged community.
As for Maybank Singapore, it has been involved in the RRR since 2017, distributing food packs and providing financial support to more than 1,000 families in the republic.
This year, it has partnered with Free Food for All (FFFA) to contribute Ramadhan food packs to 200 low-income families.
“In this rising cost environment, there are many families who are facing financial challenges, and we are pleased to partner with FFFA for this year’s RRR programme through our Zakat fund contribution to support their beneficiaries,” said Maybank Singapore Team Lead for Deposits and Investments (Islamic Banking) Sazzali Sabandi.
“As the fasting month approaches, we want to alleviate some financial burdens on lower-income families and bring some cheer to them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Founder of FFFA Nizar Mohd Shariff said its team is immensely proud of the support given by Maybank year after year.
“It is only through such support that the community can evolve into a more cohesive society, where good people come together to do great things," he said.
A cheque worth S$20,000 has been presented to FFFA Ambassador Chris Jones by Maybank Singapore’s Head of Retail Wealth & Branch Distribution Lim Kok Boon to support their outreach efforts to help the vulnerable in society.
The programme aligns with Maybank Islamic's commitment to invest in the common good and the Maybank Group’s mission of humanising financial services across its operations.
