5+1 decides to prepare for fresh talks with Iran

TEHRAN,Sept.29(MNA) – The six major powers have decided to lay the groundwork for another round of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, AP quoted a senior U.S. official as saying on Thursday. The announcement was made after foreign ministers of the 5+1 group countries, namely the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany, discussed Iran during a closed-door meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday. According to the AP report, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton was instructed to reach out to the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili. Ashton represents the 5+1 group in nuclear negotiations with Iran and Jalili is Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator. However, according to the U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity, no date was set for the possible resumption of talks with Iran. The latest round of high-level talks between Iran and world powers was held in Moscow on June 18 and 19.
