6th Turkey-USA economic partnership commission meeting

WASHINGTON (A.A) - 04.03.2011 - Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy undersecretary said on Thursday that Turkey was willing to boost trade with the United States.
Speaking after 6th meeting of the Turkey-USA Economic Partnership Commission held in Washington D.C., Foreign Ministry deputy undersecretary Selim Yenel, responsible for bilateral relations and public diplomacy, said, "we discussed technical assistance of the United States to make Istanbul a center of finance on the global scale. We may reach our goal more rapidly if we manage to get assistance from the United States more."
Yenel, at a joint news conference with Jose Fernandez, Assistant Secretary of State for economy, energy and business world, stated that private sector of the two countries should meet more. "Related units of the two parties assessed opportunities for cooperation at the partnership commission meeting," he said.
"Energy sector, renewable energy and energy productivity are promising opportunities. We hope that U.S. companies will make use of opportunities that will contribute us to produce more energy. We also discussed joint investment, production and cooperation opportunities in third countries," Yenel said.
Yenel said they also discussed some concerns on agriculture and medicine products and Generalized System of Preferences in the United States. 
"We target to boost bilateral trade volume which is below the potential. At this point we should criticize ourselves. We should give information to Turkish companies regarding the opportunities. The United States should not be in hesitation to make investment in Turkey. If we manage to give information to U.S. companies regarding the opportunities in Turkey, we may record more progress," he said.
Fernandez pointed to the important opportunities on boosting of economic relations between Turkey and the United States. He said the parties focused on strengthening ties between the business circles of the two countries, supporting of innovation, assessment and strengthening of areas of cooperation. 
He said they also discussed cooperation in third countries, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, carrying out joint studies with the Turkish government to make Istanbul a more important finance center, as well as creating opportunities for investment and cooperation in electricity.
Fernandez said the parties recorded progress in establishing strategic and economic cooperation. "We hope to work together with our partners in Turkey to make further progress."
Responding to a question, Fernandez said Turkish companies are more active than U.S. companies in many regions of the world and cited entrepreneurship of Turkish construction industry in area of infrastructure. 
Fernandez also said the sides assessed the difficulties in exports of agricultural products between the two countries, noting it seemed that an actual progress was recorded. 
Fernandez said U.S. companies acting on nuclear energy area were among the best in the world, and noted that they did their best to support nuclear industry in other places.
Yenel, who later spoke to Turkish reporters, said Turkey and the United States got closer following eruption of the incidents in the Middle East.
