Distribution of Turkey's assistance to Somalia to begin
MOGADISHU (A.A) - August 11, 2011 - Distribution of the assistance collected by the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Directorate, Religious Affairs Directorate General, Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish daily Sabah will begin at camps in Mogadishu.
Somali workers loaded the foodstuff parcels to lorries after taking them from the depot allocated to Turkish Red Crescent in Mogadishu Port.
Turkish journalists helped with the loading of the packages.
The aid, which includes baby formula and milk powder as well as medication to cure most common diseases in Somalia, will be distributed by representatives from TIKA and Red Crescent in Mogadishu.
Separately, Turkish Red Crescent officials, working in coordination with the executives of Somalia, asked government of Somalia to allocate an appropriate area to erect a tent-site.
TIKA will be responsible for the water, sewerage and electricity system of the tent-site.
The tents will be delivered to Mogadishu with the ship carrying 5,000 tones of Turkish assistance.
The depot in Mogadishu Port will serve as Turkish Red Crescent Logistic Center.
A technical team from Turkish Red Crescent will arrive in Mogadishu on Thursday to establish a computer system. So that distribution of the assistance can be pursued both by Somalia and Turkey.
Turkey has launched a massive aid campaign to help efforts to fight hunger in eastern Africa where the World Food Program estimates that 10 million people already need humanitarian aid.
The U.N. Children's Fund estimates that more than 2 million children are malnourished and in need of lifesaving action in the region.
